![]() Aliens of the Vinvocci species reveal themselves and attempt to explain that the device is a simple medical device from their homeworld, but are unsuccessful. They travel to the Naismith estate where they discover Naismith is in possession of an alien "Immortality Gate" and has enlisted the Master to fix its programming. Mott is repeatedly warned by an apparitional woman in white (Bloom) to arm himself to protect the Doctor before joining him in the TARDIS. But before the Doctor can learn more, the Master is abducted by troops and placed in the custody of billionaire Joshua Naismith (David Harewood). The Doctor discovers that the sound is not a symptom of the Master's insanity but something implanted in him from outside. The Doctor tracks the Master to wastelands outside London. The Doctor attempts to trace the Master, on Christmas Eve, and encounters his old friend Wilfred Mott (Bernard Cribbins), to whom the Doctor explains a prophecy that he is to die soon. On present day Earth, a cult loyal to the Master attempt to resurrect him the Master's ex-wife, Lucy Saxon (Alexandra Moen), sabotages the ceremony, however, and the Master is brought back suffering from constant hunger but also having gained incredible strength and speed along with energy projection from his constantly expending energy. The Doctor learns from an Ood, a psychic alien, that his nemesis the Master (John Simm) will shortly return, heralding "the end of time itself". In the episode's conclusion, as has happened before, the Doctor regenerates and becomes a new man-with a new personality and physical traits-setting up the show's following series with Matt Smith as the star and Steven Moffat as executive producer. The Doctor is able to avert this, but incurs fatal injuries. The Master brings the human race under his control as part of an elaborate plan to restore the world of his and the Doctor's own people, the Time Lords, from their demise in the Time War referred to in the series. The story features the Tenth Doctor (Tennant), who has been running from a prophecy of his impending demise, as he is drawn into a scheme by his old nemesis, the Master (Simm). ![]() The special also features the return of many other actors to the show, including Catherine Tate, John Simm, Jacqueline King, Alexandra Moen, Billie Piper, Camille Coduri, Freema Agyeman, Noel Clarke, John Barrowman, Elisabeth Sladen, Tommy Knight, Jessica Hynes and Russell Tovey. Contentsīernard Cribbins, who appeared in the story "Voyage of the Damned" and throughout Series 4 as Wilfred Mott, grandfather of Donna Noble, acts as the companion to the Doctor in this two-part story. Davies was succeeded as executive producer and showrunner by Steven Moffat. It is also the last Doctor Who story written and produced by Russell T Davies, who shepherded the series' return to British television in 2005 and served as the series' executive producer and chief writer. This is the last story for lead actor David Tennant, who hands over the role of alien time traveller the Doctor to Matt Smith. It was originally broadcast on BBC One in the United Kingdom on 25 December 2009 and 1 January 2010, and is the fifth Doctor Who Christmas special.
